On this day in 1783, the last British troops leave New York City three months after the signing of the Treaty of Paris:
Evacuation Day on November 25 marks the day in 1783 when the British Army departed from New York City on Manhattan Island, after the end of the American Revolutionary War. In their wake, General George Washington triumphantly led the Continental Army from his headquarters north of the city across the Harlem River, and south through Manhattan to the Battery at its southern tip.

Hawk photobombs a Minnesota traffic camera and stares deeply into it:
In Whitewater’s streets, so lively and bright,
Shop Small Saturday is a pure delight.
With volunteers bright, and shopkeepers in sight,
Together they bring the town’s spirit to light.
Their efforts, more than cash transactions,
Reflect the town’s best interactions.
Not politics’ play, but unity’s day,
Small shops’ big day, full of satisfactions.
In the midst of the crowd, there’s a subtle dance,
A dark horse, perhaps, given half a chance.
Unnoticed but wise, beneath Whitewater’s skies,
Quietly shaping a brighter expanse.
this was so fun today. food trucks, crafts, and presents. roasted coffee was delicious. hope it becomes a tradition!
“Shop Small Saturday is a pure delight.” Yes, a pure delight.
There seemed to be more merchants, more food vendors, and more patrons than last year. The weather was crisp, but only enough to remind one of the season. Between the community building and Cravath, people were roasting marshmallows near a fire pit. The aroma of the log fire was inviting.
From one end of the community building along the sidewalk, past the swift house, and around to the back, were lines of merchants leading to coffee, beer, wine, and food trucks. Inside the building, one found more vendors, a children’s craft table, and a mailbox to send letters to Santa. (I thought about writing to him, but I’m confident that Whitewater is already on his good list, and we’ve better times ahead.)
With the help of an artistic and friendly vendor, I managed to sign into my Venmo account. (A nearby volunteer, watching the spectacle, will be able to say, ‘Well, it really is true that anything is possible if someone tries.‘)
A great time, today. Whitewater is sure to welcome the Shop Small Market again next year. Like the City Market and Saturday Market, this day can and should become one of our local customs.
Indeed a nearby volunteer was inspired to master logging into their own Venmo for a purchase from that same vendor. Excellent gifts for upcoming holidays.
Yes, so many nice items on offer.
