Daily Bread for 9.19.24: Whitewater Again Has a Dedicated Supermarket

Good morning.

Thursday in Whitewater will be partly cloudy, with a high of 84. Sunrise is 6:39, and sunset is 6:56, for 12 hours and 17 minutes of daytime. The moon is a waning gibbous, with 96.7 percent of its visible disk illuminated.

Whitewater’s Community Development Authority meets at 5:30 PM.

On this day in 1796, George Washington’s Farewell Address is printed across America as an open letter to the public.

After years without a dedicated supermarket, Whitewater has an ALDI @ 1380 W. Main Street.

There was a ribbon-cutting this morning.

Before today’s grand opening, I stopped in last night and found ALDI clean, well-organized, with wide aisles. (I had never been inside an ALDI before, although we have ordered from the Janesville location through Instacart.)

Quite sharp, and a welcome business addition to Whitewater.

Updated, morning of 9.19: I added a reply to a post comment. I’ve also reproduced that reply below:

Unquestionably right. The old Sentry closed in ’15, and Whitewater went years fumbling with old-guard CDA attempts to bring a dedicated supermarket. They accomplished nothing of the kind.

ALDI is in Whitewater because the city has a new municipal administration that brought ALDI here.

I want to take a moment to genuinely thank the city officials, staff, and everyone in the community who put in the hard work to bring ALDI to Whitewater. It’s been a long road, and their persistence and dedication have finally paid off with a much-needed addition to our town.

But let’s clear something up before the DLK fan club starts their victory lap. Yes, DLK owned the land. And yes, they got a fat check for it—far more than what that contaminated, neglected property was actually worth, as anyone can see in the reports submitted to the CDA and City Council. They sat on that eyesore for years, doing nothing but letting it rot while the rest of us had to live with it.

And now, after getting paid a premium, some will make them out to be heroes. Spare me that tired old tune. Let’s not forget that representatives of DLK are often the first ones to shoot down other developers and community projects that could actually benefit from taxpayer support, the same way they’ve profited from it. All thanks to their cronies who used to sit on the city council and the one or two still left on the CDA, pulling strings to make sure DLK always comes out on top.

So while I’m thrilled about ALDI and grateful to everyone who truly made this happen, let’s not rewrite history here. This was not and was never about DLK being magnanimous—they got their payout. The real credit belongs to the people who worked tirelessly to see this project through despite the hurdles, not to those who’ve done nothing but take from this community unless there’s a check involved.

Simply, the arrival of ALDI in Whitewater reflects the competence and persistence we’re seeing now, a stark contrast to the opportunism and ineffectiveness of past years. This development symbolizes the positive change and focus on the public good that’s finally taking root. While private interests may benefit, the entire community and surrounding area stand to gain as well.

The old guard represents a bygone era that struggled to move the community forward.
