A simple question: Are traditional gifts like flowers or candy still welcome on Valentine’s Day? (Here I am assuming that they once were; are they still?)

I’m sure that they’re not welcome anymore as someone, somewhere became offended and complained and filed a lawsuit to banish such gifts or acts of kindness.
Flowers and candy are just fine. It really is the thought that counts.
It’s so funny that you linked to a story about dating tips from bartenders for Valentines Day. It’s really, really hard to imagine you using a line about a polar bear or any other line in a bar.
Your writing runs a wide range, just not that wide. 😉
Cheers,

Show me a woman that doesn’t like roses, candy, or lobster dinner. Hmmm…
Beautiful flowers would never be wrong.
Heartening, I think, that some traditions are still in style.
