Really liked War Horse but I doubt it will win. There are many pictures on the lsit that I don’t know about.

Why are there so many movies this year? The list seems too big. Are these movies really all in the competition for best movie?

It’s true that there are more nominees than there used to be. I’m not sure what to make of it. It allows more fIlms to get recognized as nominees, but the larger field (if it divides the vote) would allow a film to win with fewer votes.

If you haven’t seen the ‘other’ Brad Pitt movie in contention, try Terrance Malick’s excellent “Tree of Life,” literally about life from Genesis to the present, as well as an American family’s tumultuous life in the 1950’s. It’s available on DVD. Pitt stars and was Producer. This film was shown at Whitewater Seniors in the Park, and was overwhelmingly well-received.

My vote is for Moneyball and best actor for Brad Pitt. Fantastic movie but quirky enough that alas it probably won’t win. Highly recommend though.
Hugo was also excellent. It’s actually the story of early French film creator George Melies, as seen through the eyes of a young boy. You’ve probably seen Melies’ film ‘A Trip tp the Moon.”
Also, catch the performance of Demian Bichir, in ‘A Better Life.’ He’s nominated for Best Actor for an incredible performance as the illegal alien father of a Hispanic son struggling to be a good son. It will make you realize the plight of good people who are illegals that strive for a better life…sad, touching, realistic.
Thanks, Phantom Stranger — I need to make a checklist of performances and films to catch this time of year, and see as many of them as possible.
Fortunately it’s much, much easier to see performances in a tape/disc/cable/satellite/on-demand world than it was when theaters or broadcast television were the only way to see a film. Then, one either had to wait for a revival (if theaters nearby had them), or hope a television broadcast wasn’t too heavily edited (as it commonly was).

Tree of Life was wonderful. That’s my vote. 🙂

It’s a great time for movie fans.
