Thanks for playing the King of the Delta Blues on this Monday morning! Robert Johnson is a brilliant musical life cut too short. Going onto youtube, you can, of course, hear any of his 25-30 recorded tracks. There are interesting youtube conversations regarding the recording speed inconsistencies in some of his tracks. Some tracks it is claimed, like They’re Red Hot, were recorded at the wrong speed (faster, I guess) and so his vocals and guitar-work seem (impossibly) higher tone and frenetic.
Anyway- it’s kind of fun to go down that rabbit-hole and hear slowed down versions of some of these appartently, mis-recorded tracks. They may be onto something, but I haven’t bothered to check other sources on this claim.
You’re welcome – great stuff, isn’t it? Truly extraordinary musicians engender all sorts of fascinating legends and lore, and Robert Johnson is certainly among that small, august number.
